VINTAGE CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES

Hkfm 042 The Store With No Walls—a HKFM fixture—always features great vintage items such as this 1960s mink and leather cross jacket—never worn!—for only $250. You can usually find them in the bus lot behind the information booth—look for their sign!

HKFM regular Charles Adler Clothiers sells these locally and handmade, one-of-a-kind patchwork belts which start at $75. Look for them in the bus lot behind the information booth!

The first-ever iPod for sale at HKFM. From the year...1903?

Votw-edison-ge-victrola Meet Hell's Kitchen Flea Market dealer, "Old and Unusual Stuff." Merchandise includes "mostly boys' toys," including a brass fan, Victrola and phonograph. The vintage Brass GE fan (1917-20) is particularly sought-after because both the cage and the blades are all-brass! And, yes, it is in working order! (Asking $150.)

The Victrola (1919) was manufactured by the Victor Talking Machine Co, which eventually became RCA Victor. It plays '78s. (Asking $395.)

The Edison phonograph (1903) is not only glorious design, but great American history. This is apparently the only patent Mr. Edison ever kept and produced. Sort of the first iPod in a way, because it was the first mass-produced device to play recorded music. (Asking $695.)

HKFM Facebook test

Time for a test of this handy-dandy Facebook icon, button, badge, whatever-it's-called, that's supposed to link to Hell's Kitchen Flea Market's Facebook page.

Alas, HKFM's Facebook page looks screwy in MS Explorer on several computers we've tested it on. (Explorer versions 7 and 8 anyway). It looks fine in Firefox, of course. As hugely popular as both Facebook and MS Explorer are, you'd think that each party would make dare sure that it was better optimized for the other one.

Here goes . . . .

Gadling goes to Hell's Kitchen Flea Market

Gadling-2009 Gadling, a travel-related blog, recently highlighted Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. From the review:

The market now combines an enormous range of items, everything from African tribal artifacts to Mid-Century Modern furniture to fine silver. It's one of the first stops for the city's bargain hunters and those on the lookout for a truly unique item to decorate their apartment, in New York or beyond.

We're in the book

Bargain_hunter WE'RE IN THE BOOK! Hell's Kitchen Flea Market and The Garage are featured in the Bargain Hunter & Flea Market Finder (GeoNova Publishing, 2009) as "Favorite Fleas." Keep your eyes open for it!

This full-color publication features shopping tips, road maps, and market directories by state.

It also recommends the 9th Ave. restaurants near HKFM. We agree!

Talk about "reuse" and "recycle!"

Worldwide, flea markets serve community-enhancing and economic functions. But have you ever thought about how they are "green" endeavors?

Flea markets use little if any electricity. They feature a lot of items that are handmade, or perhaps were once mass produced, but aren't any longer. Many other items in flea markets end up being purchased and "repurposed." Flea Markets are more pedestrian/people-friendly than they are car-friendly. They tend to be welcome fixtures in their neighborhoods.

Flea markets are good things for everyone to promote!
