Chrome — Give the metal a shine with a bottle of automotive polish. It can make even the dingiest metal glow and will give it a layer of protection. Use brass polish to clean up lighting fixtures. If the metal is too far gone, give it a coat of matte spray paint.
Wood — First sand, then restain. If your piece has watermarks, soak the stain overnight with petroleum jelly or mayonnaise. Don't be afraid to cover desks with colored paint or decoupage, or modernize them with fresh hardware.
Upholstery — Unless your chair has highly prized silk brocade, remove old fabric and stuffing and replace it with allergen-free fill and new cloth. With animal prints and a staple gun, you can recover chairs with a bit of attitude.
Lamps — Even the campiest lamps can go from eyesore to eye-catching. Try covering lamps with the latest oil-rubbed bronze finish and funky new shades.
Frames — Empty frames as artwork has become a very popular and inexpensive way to turn a dull wall into a showpiece. If you're so inclined, have glass fitted for the frames.
