CHEKPEDS Traffic Protest to draw attention to dangerous pedestrian area.
June 13: Traffic protest
On Saturday, June 13th there will be an anti-traffic protest on Ninth
Avenue, 2-4:00 p.m., sponsored by CHEKPEDS (Clinton-Hell's Kitchen
Pedesitrian Safety Coalition), Transportation Alternatives and
HKNA (The Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood Association).
The crowd will walk solemnly down Ninth Avenue behind a New
Orleans style funeral brass band. We will stop to place bouquets at
five sites where pedestrians/cyclists have lost their lives to
vehicles. All of our elected officials will be participating.
The gathering place is the NW corner of 45th Street and 9th Avenue; ending at 36th Street, Ramp C to the Lincoln Tunnel.
Who we are: The coalition was founded by residents and community
leaders to reclaim 9th Avenue from the hellish Lincoln Tunnel traffic .
The coalition is growing rapidly with Businesses, Institutions and
Property Owners joining in to correct the dangerous conditions in the
neighborhood : pedestrians risk their lives crossing the streets,
children cannot safely walk to schools; residents cannot breathe or
sleep; public transportation is ineffective; local stores experience
slow and costly deliveries; personal safety is at risk .
More information to come. Please join us. We need to bring attention to this dire situation!
