American Express is gearing up for its first Small Business Saturday this weekend and we for one are excited to see this sign of the times.
The idea is to promote local shopping at independently owned businesses. Even without walls and credit card machines (as such, we are unable to officially take part in this event) we at Hell's Kitchen Flea Market salute this initiative both as a small business, and as an incubator for the entrepreneurial spirit of local commerce everywhere.
In bad or good economic times the resourceful and entrepreneurial discover the opportunities available to them by creating their own businesses. The vendors at our fleas thrive in this spirit and we are glad to see it exalted by the promotion and celebration of independent commerce. -- Alan Boss
The announcement of Small Business Saturday signals to us that corporate America may be taking a new perspective in the changing western world. As consumers become more environmentally and pocketbook conscious, where people choose to spend our money is an interesting way to make voices heard.
As a business model flea markets promote the practical value of buying recycled and reused and the aesthetic value of rare and one-of-a-kind finds, while also encouraging face-to-face interaction which has dwindled in the electronic era.
